I was desperate to play with her, but she told me she was afraid of snakes.
Undeterred, I wasn’t going to let her phobia stand in the way of our game.
So, while she was preparing flat breads to have with dinner, I changed the board to Worms and Ladders, taping over every last snake and colouring the squares back in until not a single smiling serpent could be seen.
And it seemed to work – she was content, and I got to play.
We got straight into it. The worms did tend to move around the board quite a lot while we were playing, but honestly, that just added a new level of excitement.
Worms, she was fine with.
In what could have turned out to be a fatal move, I wasn’t thinking when I put the Jungle Book on after our game.
Trust in me? After all my hard work, I was close to blowing it.
To rescue the night, I turned off the TV and got the worms back out.

So fantastic, I love the ‘Roald Dahlesqueness’ of this tale.
