When Tim started dating his best friend’s sister, his best friend’s best friend became his best friend.

And that created a problem for Tim.

Sally and Stewart were fine with it; they said that they could all be best friends together.

But that didn’t fly with Tim. He had specific rules on best friends.

There could only ever be one best friend. No one could have two best friends.

Which meant that Tim had a decision to make. He had to choose who would be his best friend.

But Tim could not choose between Sally and Stewart: one had been his best friend for most of his life, and the other he loved to spend time with more than anyone.

It was the most perfectly impossible situation for a best friend to be in.

By chance, while Tim was in his favourite bus stop debating the quandary, he met a new best friend, Barry, which sorted out the problem.

After that, Tim no longer saw much of Sally, but he did still occasionally meet up with Stewart for their fortnightly game of tiddlywinks, which was much more formal now that they were no longer best friends, but as hotly contested as ever.
