Those in High Places

When we were boys, Michael and I climbed as high into the tree as we were brave enough to go.

It was a very tall tree.

Michael climbed higher than me, which I was ashamed about at the time. No matter how many times I tried to take that next step, I just wasn’t brave enough to go higher.

But when it was time for us to go, Michael couldn’t climb back down. His legs wouldn’t allow it. Nor his arms.

There he was, clinging to the branches with the most desperate look in his eye.

And he’s still there to this day.

Which goes to show: even if you’re brave enough to climb the highest, you still might end up spending your entire life stuck at the top of a fucking tree.
